Interim & fractional commercial leadership · 20+ years
You probably don't need a full-time sales director in Finland — at least not yet. You need the expertise: direction, process, and leadership. But maybe not 40 hours a week, and not a six-figure annual cost with overheads. That gap is exactly what a fractional sales leader is built for.
A fractional sales leader is an experienced commercial leader who works with your company part-time — typically one to three days a week. You're not buying hands; you're buying experience and structure.
In this article I cover what the fractional model actually means, when it makes sense in the Finnish market, what it costs, and when you should choose something else.
What a fractional sales leader actually does
The difference from a regular consultant matters: a fractional leader doesn't hand you a slide deck and disappear. They take responsibility for leading sales: part-time, but for real.
In practice, three things:
Builds a repeatable sales model. Who you sell to, what stages a deal moves through, what happens at each stage, and what a good proposal looks like. This is what makes growth predictable, not dependent on one star rep.
Leads the reps and the numbers. A weekly rhythm, pipeline reviews, coaching, metrics. Not revenue stared at after the fact, but leading indicators you can still influence.
Transfers the knowledge into the company. The best fractional leader gradually makes themselves unnecessary: they build a structure that survives after they leave.
When a fractional sales leader makes sense in Finland
The model fits best in these situations:
You already have reps in Finland, but nobody leads them. The founder or country manager handles sales leadership on the side and never quite gets to it. The reps are left without direction. This is the most common — and most expensive — situation.
You're entering or scaling in Finland but don't want to commit to a permanent hire yet. A senior sales director costs 8,000–12,000 € a month in Finland. Early in a market entry, few companies need — or can justify — that full-time.
You need experience the company doesn't have locally. You might be great at building the product, but systematising sales in a new market isn't your strength. You buy that expertise at a fraction of the risk.

What a fractional sales leader costs
The price is typically 2,500–7,000 € a month depending on the workload and scope. That sounds like a lot until you compare it to the real alternative: a full-time senior leader's total cost is 100,000–150,000 € a year, plus the recruitment risk and the time it takes before a new person is productive.
The point of the fractional model isn't to be the cheapest. The point is that you pay for experience only for the part you actually need — and you get it right away, not after a three-month hiring process.
Fractional vs. interim vs. consultant — what's the difference?
These get mixed up easily.
In short:
A consultant gives a recommendation and leaves. You execute. Good for analysis, poor if execution is the problem.
A fractional leader is a permanent part-time leader. They show up weekly, leading and building continuously. Fits when the need is ongoing but not full-time.
An interim leader is effectively full-time but for a fixed period. Fits a change situation or a hiring gap. I wrote about the interim model separately.
Most companies scaling in Finland need structure and leadership first — not more people. That's why fractional is so often the right first step.
How it shows up in real life
I've seen the same pattern again and again: a company hires more reps because "we need more pipeline," when the real problem is that nobody leads the reps they already have, and sales was never built to be repeatable.
A new rep in a working machine produces. A new rep in chaos adds chaos — and burns out in a few months.
Another thing I've learned: the best rep is rarely the best sales manager. When you promote your best rep to lead, you often lose a good rep and get a mediocre manager. The fractional model gives you a ready leader without making that trade.
And honestly: I don't want to be on my clients' payroll full-time. My best work happens when I build a structure that runs without me — and you pay only for the time that generates the most margin.
